چکیده

This final report summarises the work undertaken within the project entitled, ‘The formation and occurrence of haloacetic acids in drinking water’, funded by the EPSRC (EP/D502411/1), the Drinking Water Inspectorate and Anglian Water, during the period of October 2005 to March 2009. The project was also supported by Severn Trent Water, United Utilities and Scottish Water, who provided advice and assistance with the provision of water samples. The project involved laboratory studies undertaken in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London, and the analysis of samples at the Department of Soil Science of the University of Reading.

Background and Aim: Natural organic matter (NOMs), measured on the basis of organic carbon, produces disinfection by-products precursors (DBPs) during the chlorination process. Some DBPs are carcinogenic. NOMs are not completely removed by conventional water treatment. As a result, in addition to forming DBPs, they support bacterial regrowth in the water distribution systems and cause unpleasan...

Toxic Byproduct Formation during Electrochemical Treatment of Latrine Wastewater

Electrochemical systems are an attractive option for onsite latrine wastewater treatment due to their high efficiency and small footprint. While concerns remain over formation of toxic byproducts during treatment, rigorous studies examining byproduct formation are lacking. Experiments treating authentic latrine wastewater over variable treatment times, current densities, chloride concentrations...

Determination of trace levels of haloacetic acids and perchlorate in drinking water by ion chromatography with direct injection.

Disinfection by products of haloacetic acids and perchlorate pose significant health risks, even at low microg/l levels in drinking water. A new method for the simultaneous determination of nine haloacetic acids (HAAs) and perchlorate as well as some common anions in one run with ion chromatography was developed. The HAAs tested included mono-, di-, trichloroacetic acids, mono, di-, tribromoace...

Formation of iodo-trihalomethanes, iodo-haloacetic acids, and haloacetaldehydes during chlorination and chloramination of iodine containing waters in laboratory controlled reactions.

Iodine containing disinfection by-products (I-DBPs) and haloacetaldehydes (HALs) are emerging disinfection by-product (DBP) classes of concern. The former due to its increased potential toxicity and the latter because it was found to be the third most relevant DBP class in mass in a U.S. nationwide drinking water study. These DBP classes have been scarcely investigated, and this work was perfor...

Comparison of high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry with GC methods in analysis of haloacetic acids in drinking water.

Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are major byproducts of chlorination of drinking water. Electrospray ionization high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry mass spectrometry (ESI-FAIMS-MS) provides a tool for direct monitoring of these compounds. However, treated drinking water samples can be challenging to analyze due to the large number of chemicals present and due to matrix effects that...
